Take a good look at that photo. It’s the world’s best and bravest big wave riders, the WSL Big Wave Tour head honchos, and Shannon Quirk. That’s typically where you’ll find Shannon… smack dab in the middle of the big wave action. In all fairness, Shannon is WSL staff, in the role of Big Wave Event Coordinator, but she’d be there anyway.
I first met Shannon at the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group safety summit at Turtle Bay last winter. She was covering the event for Grind TV, one of the news outlets she freelances for in addition to managing the social media presence for The Inertia. Shannon’s not your typical ‘gal-on-the-scene’ corespondent. She has two degrees from UCLA in English and Spanish Literature, (She is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese) and was trained by the LA Times as a photojournalist. Shannon even launched an action sports media business, TheSurfChannel.com.
When she’s not chasing a storm, surfing, or charging down a mountainside on her snowboard, Shannon actively promotes women’s surfing and equality in the sport. She recently sat down with Stacie Vanags of the Salted Spirit podcast to discuss the topic, among others. It’s a great listen-
